The Moment Before I Was Nothing

The monsters fell from the dark swirling hole in the sky. They swiftly began to kill everything in sight. They didn’t care if it was children or women. They were bred to enjoy their screams. Their faces, with the look like gargoyles, were twisted into rotten smiles. Their torsos were that of the deadliest spider. Their arms were long and thick, slippery with acid slime, their finger nails were like blades. And when they sliced, they sent you into the worst pain imaginable and to the darkest place. They had torn, dark wings on their backs, but somehow they still flew. Their legs were real human legs. Their eyes were taken from ravens.

The city, darkened with blood, began to fall. I watched as blistering fires covered entire skyscrapers. I watched as glass fell like glistening rain. I watched as people ran past with horrified expressions. I watched until tears blinded me, the people’s pain and fear filled me. Here innocent people die. Here innocence was being stained by blood. My loud scream, full of their pain, echoed along with the others.

I let the walls, holding back the bright light of my power, crumble. I closed my eyes and lifted my hands toward the angry sky. God’s burning heat of the power he gifted me with traveled throughout my body. White light could be seen behind my closed eye lids. Huge white wings split and ripped through the skin on my back, but the pain only mixed with all the rest.

I opened my eyes with a snap. I knew my bright blue eyes were glowing and the halo was clearly visible on my head. They all stared and gaped at the sight of me. The chaotic city stood still, but for only a moment. They all felt my power rushing past – embracing the humans and threatening the demonic monsters.

I walked forward. One by one, the shivering monsters burned and turned to ash as I passed. Their screams were ear splitting, like sharp finger nails on a chalk board. Panicking, the demons started to kill again in a frantic rage.

Anger welled up in me again as a small child was being torn apart in front of me. His eyes pleading with me to save him as the claws sliced through him. He gasped and spluttered.  Slowly he twitched and his eyes filmed over.  As soon as those claws ripped through him it was impossible to save him. I opened my mouth and sang in sorrow. The sound of the voices of a million angels came from deep inside me. The earth began to shake and crack.

The monsters tried to flee by flying, but dropped to the ground in pain. They began to die faster.  They began to turn from ashes to dust - from dust to nothing. They were being sent to the deep depths of hell, never to escape.

It wasn’t quick enough for me. My whole body began to tremble. My full power was awakening. I spread my wings and flew to the tallest building in the middle of the city. Black fire was melting its metal frame. I landed, sending my feet screaming in pain as the fire from hell burned them.

I drew my wings in as the fire licked at them. Light surrounded the city. Not a shadow was in sight. The dark swirling clouds above turned to white. Feathers began to fall from the sky. Everything they touched, they purified. They would destroy anything unholy.

I unleashed my full power and the city began to fix itself. The black fire disappeared. Most wounds healed except those irreversible wounds inflicted by the blades. I cleansed the city. I cleansed the minds of the people, erasing the horribleness of this day. The bodies of those damned disappeared from the streets.

Everything turned perfect and pure for the time being. They’ll be back sometime in the future to take more souls with them. I fell to my knees in exhaustion. The power gifted to me was slowly leaving my body returning to the creator. I had served my purpose and I was no longer needed. I smiled as my pain was lifted from me. The images of the horror of this day and the days before it left me. My wings vanished. I closed my eyes as darkness overtook my body and I became nothing. I became something that was and was no more. A light river took me downstream until I could feel no more, hear no more, think no more, until I was gone completely.
